Home Renovations & Remodelling in Newcastle & the North East

Love where you live. Make your home work better for you.

You might love your neighbourhood, your children's school and the life you've built around your home. But that doesn't necessarily mean your house works as well as it could.

Perhaps the kitchen feels disconnected from the garden, the rooms are too small or dark, or previous extensions have left you with an awkward layout. Maybe your family needs another bedroom, a home office or simply somewhere everyone can spend time together.

Moving isn't always the answer. By the time you've considered stamp duty, estate agents, solicitors and the cost of moving, you could be spending a considerable amount of money on another house that still needs work.

At Acre Design, we help homeowners across Newcastle and the North East rethink, redesign and transform their existing homes.

Whether that means opening up the ground floor, improving an older extension, converting unused space or combining a renovation with a new extension, our starting point is always the same: understanding what you actually need from your home.

A better layout can make all the difference

Many houses were designed for a very different way of living.

Separate kitchens and dining rooms, poorly connected living spaces, unused conservatories and awkward extensions can make even a generously sized home feel cramped.

Sometimes the solution is to add more space. Sometimes it's about making better use of the space you already have.

We explore both.

That might involve removing internal walls to create a sociable kitchen and dining area, improving the connection to your garden, introducing rooflights and larger windows, or reconfiguring bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs.

We can also investigate whether your loft, garage or existing extensions offer opportunities that haven't yet been fully explored.

Our aim isn't simply to make your home bigger. It's to make every part of it work harder for you.

Bring the whole house together

One of the most common problems we encounter is a house that has been altered several times without a clear overall plan.

An extension might have added floor area but left the original rooms dark. A conservatory might provide occasional extra space but be uncomfortable for much of the year. A previous renovation might have improved one room while creating problems elsewhere.

Rather than looking at each issue in isolation, we consider how the entire home works together.

We look at movement between rooms, natural light, storage, views, connections to the garden and how your needs might change over time.

Where appropriate, we can also explore improvements to insulation, glazing, heating and the wider energy performance of your home, including options such as heat pumps and solar technology.

The result should feel like one thoughtfully designed home, rather than a collection of separate alterations.

Invest in the home you enjoy every day

A renovation is a significant financial commitment, and it's sensible to think about how that investment might affect your property's value.

But there's another return that's harder to measure.

It's having a kitchen where everyone can gather at Christmas. A quiet office where you can work comfortably. Enough storage to keep family life organised. A warm, bright living space that opens onto the garden.

You spend thousands of hours in your home over the years. Improving the way it looks, feels and functions can make an enormous difference to everyday life.

We believe that matters just as much as the extra square metres.

Explore the options before committing to expensive building work

One of the biggest challenges with a major renovation is knowing whether the first design you've been shown is actually the best solution.

That's why our process begins with a Needs & Options Review.

We take time to understand your priorities, establish a realistic brief and explore different ways to achieve what you're looking for.

Instead of immediately committing you to one scheme, we can investigate alternative layouts and approaches, including solutions that might involve less construction than you originally expected.

We'll consider the practicalities of the existing building, planning requirements, structural implications and likely construction costs as the design develops.

You'll have the opportunity to share images and ideas that inspire you, and we'll bring our own design experience and creativity to the conversation.

The aim is to make the important decisions with a clear understanding of your options.

See your new home before it's built

Architectural drawings are essential, but not everyone finds it easy to imagine a finished space from a floor plan.

Our architectural visualisations can help you understand how your redesigned home will look and feel before construction begins.

From the relationship between your kitchen and garden to the appearance of a new extension, realistic imagery makes it easier to explore materials, natural light and the overall design.

It also helps you make confident decisions before those choices become expensive to change.

A structured process, from first ideas to building work

Good design is only one part of a successful renovation.

You also need accurate information, realistic budgets, coordinated technical drawings and a contractor who understands exactly what they're being asked to build.

Our team brings together architectural design, technical expertise and experience of Building Regulations and construction.

Depending on the service you choose, we can provide detailed measured surveys, planning drawings, technical information, interior fit-out drawings and support with obtaining competitive contractor prices.

We can also arrange independent construction cost advice during the design process, rather than leaving you to discover whether the project is affordable only after the drawings are finished.

By working through the decisions in the right order, we aim to reduce uncertainty and make the journey from initial ideas to construction as straightforward as possible.
